The Story Behind the Photo

Baltimore Oriole
Ontario - May 6, 2006

I spend time each spring slugging my heavy bird photography gear around Point Pelee National Park, working hard to capture a few good shots of warblers, orioles, tanagers and other migrants. Because of the dynamic nature of migration, some days are just plain dead - and I look for more predictable ways to get bird photos.

A couple weeks ago I was faced with one of those slow days, which begged to be spiced up. Some friends and I decided to leave the park to shoot at a nearby campground with an active bird feeding station that was attracting Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Baltimore Orioles. I picked up some blossom-covered apple branches en route from an abandoned orchard, and set them up near the feeders. It took no time at all for the orioles to use the perches, and for us to capture some photos. This was one of my best of the day.

Happy shooting!
